Day in Review:

Today is Constitution Day.  Each year schools across the country celebrate the anniversary of the signing of the United Stated Constitution, which took place on September 17, 1787.  Since this year the 17th falls on a Saturday, we celebrated it on the 16th.  After a brief overview of the Preamble and the functions of government via a PowerPoint presentation, students created a poster to outline one of those functions of Government.

Assignments and Resources:

In small groups students read the Preamble of the Constitution:

“We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”

They then pick one of the functions of government and create a poster that depicts that function of the government.  The functions are:

  • Form a more perfect union
  • Establish justice
  • Insure domestic tranquility
  • Provide for the common defence
  • Promote the general welfare
  • Secure the Blessings of Liberty
